bolsters its already strong reputation with
the addition of four new professors in the fields of international
relations, quantitative methodology, political behavior, and judicial
politics.
Dr. Charles Finocchairo, Assistant
Professor, focuses on American political institutions, and is a
specialist on Congress and Congressional elections. A former faculty
member at SUNY Buffalo, he is the author of a number of articles in
leading political science journals, incluidng Legislative Studies
Quarterly.
Dr. Heather
Getha-Taylor, Assistant Professor, received her Ph.D. from the Maxwell
School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. She
specializes in human resource management and non-profit administration,
and has already published a number of articles in leading public
administration journals and other venues, including Public
Administration Review.
Dr. Andrea McAtee,
Assistant Professor, received her Ph.D. from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. She focuses on American political institutions
at both the state and national levels, and has also published in a
number of leading journals in political science, including the Journal
of Poltiics and Law and Society Review.
Dr. Lee Walker,
Assistant Professor, was a former faculty member at the University of
Kentucky and also a 2006 Visiting Scholar at Harvard's Institute of
Quantitative Social Science. His research interests encompass both
qualitative and quantitative methodology, as well as judicial and
comparative politics. He is the author of articles in the Journal of
Politics and Party Politics, and is currently working on a book
manuscripot examining public opinion toward the criminal justice system
in selected Latin American countries.

INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the graduate studies programs in the Department of
Political Science!
The
Department of Political Science offers four graduate degree programs:
an MA in International Studies, an MA and Ph.D. in Political Science,
and a Masters of Public Administration (MPA). The department has a
large and diverse faculty. Students in the graduate degree programs not
only have access to the extensive curriculum of the POLI Department,
but may also take related course offerings in other departments
throughout the University. Each of the programs and the main
departmental offices are located on the third floor of Gambrell Hall.
National
Ranking.
The
graduate programs at the University of South Carolina have consistently
received strong evaluations from a wide spectrum of national rankings.
Overall, the department has consistently ranked in the top 10% of
universities in the nation based on the research productivity of its
faculty. The department has received particularly positive evaluations
of its programs in American Politics, International Relations, and
Public Administration. Recent evaluations in U.S. News and World
Report have
ranked the department in the top 20 in the nation in its program in
International Relations. A recent issue of the journal, Law and Courts ranked the graduate
public law program at USC among the top 3 in the nation.
