David Whiteman's primary interest is in political communication, with secondary interests in green political thought and legislative studies.  He is currently beginning a research project on the role of film and video in movements for social change. Designed as a comparative study of American and Irish independent filmmakers, the research focuses on the role of activist political organizations in the planning, production, and distribution of film and video.

Whiteman received a Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina in 1981 and is an associate professor in the Department of Government and International Studies and an adjunct professor in the School of the Environment. He is the author of Communication in Congress: Members, Staff, and the Search for Information (University Press of Kansas, 1995), and his articles have appeared in Legislative Studies Quarterly, Political Science Quarterly, Western Political Quarterly, Human Rights Quarterly, PS, Knowledge, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Newspaper Research Journal, Irish Political Studies, International Journal of Public Administration, and American Politics Quarterly. His research projects have been supported by two grants from the National Science Foundation.  Whiteman teaches undergraduate courses on "Politics and the Mass Media," "Ecology and Politics," and "Politics and Film," as well as graduate courses on "Political Communication" and "Qualitative Methods of Political Analysis."  He has been a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Limerick (1989) and University College Dublin (1997) and a Visiting Scholar at the Brookings Institution (1985-86).  He is active in the American Political Science Association (particularly the Sections on Political Communication, Ecological and Transformational Politics, and Politics and Film), the International Communication Association, the National Association for Media Arts and Culture, the Society for Cinema Studies, and the Popular Culture Association.
