RESEARCH INTERESTS

I am currently interested in a number of areas of linguistic research, including Comparative Optimality Theory dialectology (presently of Galician, Mirandese and Portuguese), the phonological status of /l/ in Spanish (and relation to pronunciation of /ld/ vs. /lb, lg/, as in aldea, alba, algo), vowel harmony in Asturiano, the interaction of vowel and consonant length in Latin to Hispano-Romance, comparing theoretical approached to the phonological featural representation of vowels, and the relationship between language processing and language change.

TEACHING INTERESTS

I teach a variety of classes with a linguistic emphasis, including  SPAN 207 (Intermediate Oral Practice, a 1 credit course which focusses on pronunciation practice), SPAN 515/LING 504 (Introduction to Spanish Linguistics), SPAN 715/LING 734 (History of the Spanish Language), and others. In the Spring of 2000 I will also teach other courses, LING 730 (Historical Linguistics), SPAN 317-X (Spanish Phonetics and Pronunciation), and in Summer, look for Contrastive English-Spanish Phonetics and Phonology.

Areas of general teaching interest include: Spanish language, composition and culture; Spanish/Hispanic linguistics (phonetics, phonology and pronunciation; structure of the language (morphology and syntax); history and dialectology); linguistic theory; Optimality Theory; Portuguese language. I also conduct pronunciation workshops.
